Sporting Around in NYC

Today in New York City it seems that anything is possible.  Want to “go out for coffee” but are reluctant to miss some time with Fortnite?  Fear no more as Waypoint Cafe is at your service.

Located on Lower East Side’s 65 Ludlow Street, ex-game and hardware reviewer Luigino Gigante opened the store last fall.  Gigante also boasts the café background as he was raised in a family of restaurant owners. And now he’s combined these two passions and created an Esports café offering 30 Roccat-peripheral PCs, one stream room with 144 Hz monitors and someone who knows how to make a good brew.

“I’m Italian and Puerto Rican, so I come from two very different schools of thought [about] coffee. On my father’s side, it’s just straight espresso, and my mother’s side is very light, sweet, different pour-over types of coffee,” he says.

Gigante decided to create the café as he had found that there were many LAN centers but they were all sterile.

According to a recent review in Sprudge, it seems Gigante has achieved his goal of combining gaming experience with great coffee:

“While some multi-purpose businesses tend to focus on one feature over another, Waypoint is committed to both the art of gaming and specialty coffee. Serving Black Cat espresso from Intelligentisa on a La Marzocco Linea Classic and controlled drip brews from BUNN, plus cold brew from local roasters Death Wish, the cafe takes its coffee game seriously and its décor playfully. A plethora of plushies and action figures rest on the shelves of pastries and in between bags of coffee, and drink specials incorporate video game themes with them, i.e. the “star seeker sour” and “mur-lox” bagel.”

Frequenting the joint is a “mix of freelance workers, gamers, and coffee enthusiasts,” alike.

Reaping the Benefits of Tourism

Tourism is always high in New York City and the summer is no different. There were 62.8 million visitors in 2017, which was “the eighth consecutive year it earned record-breaking tourism.” As such, NYC clearly makes an effort in all it has to offer in the leisure/entertainment industry and locals can benefit from this as much as tourists. Here, we take a look at some of the highly recommended events.

Opry City Stage is happening on Times Square. Pick from a variety of shows featuring Marc Vincent Sica, Rodney Foster and more. Don’t forget Central Park and its free outdoor concerts over the summer. The 2018 SummerStage Performance series began in May and is continuing until the end of September. There is really something for everyone there.

Last week began The Rosé Mansion event. This 14 room pop up museum is held in midtown (at what was once a two story Charming Charlie) and features a different experience in each room, providing an educational experience on learning more about rosé and its history. You can “bathe” in rose petals, customize your wine, smell the roses (for real) and a whole lot more.

Don’t be stressed about tourism in New York over the summer….use it to your advantage!

Old School Italian Restaurant Thrives With No Cellphone Rule

Restaurants these days cater to a wide range of patrons. New York City is home to everything from fancy black-tie venues to noisy grill bars with ash trays on the tables. Sometimes, though, it’s the in-between that’s really unique. Tucked between two big streets in Queens is a corner restaurant called Il Triangolo, and it’s all old school Italian- both its menu and its dress code. The owner, Mario Gigliotti, considers the venue his home. All staffers wear suits, and he chats with his guests naturally as though they were personally invited. He has strict rules in his home, too, including no cellphones, no shorts and no tank tops.

When asked about his dress code and cellphone rule, Gigliotti said: “I feel this is my home. I expect people to respect that. People said that I was crazy having all these rules, especially with the phones, but they thank me now because they taste the food and enjoy their company. And they look nice, too.”

And he’s right, they do, since the place is always bustling and weekends call for reservations. The dishes are authentic and creative, complete with Italian staples, weeknight specials and original creations such as the “Homemade Tagliolini di Mamma Angela” which honors Gigliotti’s mother.

New York City has just designated Coney Island boardwalk as a Scenic Landmark in honor of its 95th birthday on Tuesday. Opened in 1923, the promenade is now 2.7 miles long.

The spot, which has drawn both locals and tourists with its sandy beaches, eateries and amusement park rides for over a century, has undergone many changes over the years. According to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, sections of the boardwalk have seen been redone in concrete, wood and recycled plastic.

Commission Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan said: “It is a beloved public space that embodies Coney Island’s demographic spirit and reflects our city’s values of tolerance, inclusivity and equity.”

Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver added “Coney Island’s boardwalk is a timeless treasure. With it’s rich history, I am confident that with this designation, it will stand and serve this city and its visitors for hundreds of years to come.”

The New York Chinese Lantern Festival is hitting the New York State Fairgrounds this weekend, complete with 1,000 Chinese lantern sculptures in a wide range of themes from Tianyu Arts in Zigong, China. 30 craftspeople, primarily from Chengdu, will join the show to assemble and maintain the sculptures through July. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is known for its prowess in the ancient art of lantern-making, which has become a family tradition in the region.

The lantern show will also feature a number of additional acts, including traditional Chinese acrobatics, plate spinning and face changing.

The event, which is sponsored by Advance Media New York, visited NYC last year as well and has made some improvements to this year’s happening. Instead of gravel paths, the entire show will take place on paved walkways, allowing for easier access for wheelchairs and strollers. The show will take place both indoors and outdoors, to protect visitors from the elements in case of  unpleasant weather, now near and inside the International Pavilion and Horticulture Building. All acts will be performed inside the International Pavilion instead of outdoors, and additional seating will be available as well as additional shows on the weekends.

Discovery’s Cash Cab is coming back to New York City this year, giving residents and tourists another chance to get rich via their commute. According to the network, the show will return this coming July, still to be hosted by Ben Bailey.

Cash Cab was off the air for five years before being revived last summer for its 11th season. The premise remains the same: passengers are challenged to a trivia game in exchange for big-money prizes. In the past, famous passengers included Matthew Perry and Brooke Shields.

According to amNewYork, “An exact release date hasn’t yet been announced. But, it’ll coincide with the 30th anniversary of the network’s fan-favorite Shark Week special. So, the premiere “Cash Cab” episode is sure to feature some fishy video clips and questions.”

NYC Subway Station Commemorates David Bowie

May 6, 2018 in Art | Comments (0)

The Brooklyn Museum is currently hosting an exhibition called David Bowie Is, and a New York City subway station is paying tribute.

The artist lived in NYC for over two decades after first coming to connect with his hero Andy Warhol. He fell in love with American soul music and Broadway, and adopted the city as his own.

Now, the track entrance of the Broadway-Lafayette station features an enormous likeness of the singer as well as concert photos and other paraphernalia just blocks away from where Bowie lived.

The art commemorates the life and work of the artist, who passed away in 2016 after battling cancer. It is sponsored by Spotify, and includes a guide called “Bowie’s Neighborhood Map,” which depicts some of the singer’s most beloved sites in the area, including Washington Square.

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is also participating in the project, and is currently selling 250,000 tickets with the rocker’s face at the Broadway-Lafayette and Bleecker Street stations. Bowie fans have been lining up for days to collect the the souvenir subway cards.
