In recognition of World AIDS Day (which takes place tomorrow, December 1), the NYC AIDS Memorial in conjunction with Jenny Holzer will host #LightTheFight.

Holzer – a New York based neo-conceptual artist – might be best known for her Protect Project exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art since it focuses on her work of more than a decade and a half.

At tomorrow’s event, Holzer will be starting the day with an interactive ceremony and performance beginning at 4.30am at the city’s AIDS Memorial Park, West Village.

Also featuring at the event will be Lewis Miller who was behind the creation of The Flower Flash.  He will be installing a Flower flash at the fountain tomorrow.

Following that, next on the agenda will see five trucks in a fleet coming with LED signs through the city displaying quotes related to how the world battles AIDS globally, and the impact it has had historically. These quotes have been taken from the emotional expression of various artists impacted by HIV and AIDS .

There is always a lot going on in New York, but somehow there is something a little bit extra magical about the fall.  Especially for those who love the outdoors which is why we recommend a visit to the New York Botanical Garden.  There, you will be privy to the World of Plants event, “featuring lush tropical rain forests, cactus-filled deserts, curated displays of palms from around the world, aquatic and carnivorous plants, and much more.”  This Botanical garden is one of the world’s “greatest botanical gardens,” with an educational program for children being touted as a “pioneer in innovative, informal science discovery facilities and activities; and its scientific research on plants and fungi is unmatched in scale, depth, and authority.”

Feeling hungry and thirsty?  Participate in the fall edition’s Brooklyn Crush Wine & Artisanal Food Festival and witness the transformation of Industry City into an “East Coast Napa Valley,” thanks to New York Wine Events.  Some of the coolest restaurants in Brooklyn will be featured and those who come along will be able to try a “curated selection of incredible wines, ciders and other beverages complemented by creative tastes and delicious hors-d’oeuvres from all over.”

New York Wine Events transforms Industry City into an East Coast Napa Valley alongside an artisanal food extravaganza with some of Brooklyn’s coolest restaurants. The New York City Marathon is coming up – Sunday November 4.  Beginning for the professional runners at 8.30am, the next division starts at 9.20am and is for elite women and 30 minutes later for men’s pro.  But if you can’t get there, why not pretend you were there and get some memorabilia in the form of a pair of NYC-Marathon-inspired shoes?

According to Brooks footwear merchandising director Brice Newton:

“When creating the NYC Pop Art Ghost 11, we sought a fun way to honor the truly iconic New York City and everyone who runs there. We turned to the style of pop art popularized in New York and found design insights that represent the big city which will motivate and celebrate runners inspired by it.”

Each year the New York City Marathon generates approximately $415 million for the economy.

This year Fort Greene Park will once again host the Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest.  Now in its 20th year, dogs will come dressed up in their Halloween costumes, to parade around the neighborhood.

The venture – established by Kath Hansen (founder of Fort Green PUPS), has been very successful.  Hansen however, will be handing over the “reins” as she believes it is “time for some fresh blood.”

Hansen works in a non-profit organization in marketing and usually starts planning the event 9 months in advance.  For the next leader of the event her advice is to “start early [since] it takes a lot longer than you think.”

The event this year takes place on Saturday, October 27 and will be judged by Heart of Brooklyn Veterinary hospital owner Dr. Bill Farmer, Sesame Street Art Director Matt Duncan, Hudson Jane owners Jen and Megan LaPorta and pop-star and anti-bullying advocate, Meredith O’Connor.

October in New York

What a great time to be in New York City!  The sun has finally gone down, the leaves are beginning to fall, the nights are drawing in and people are gearing up for the Fall holiday season – Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Selwyn – half the team of Loving New York – last month put together a whole article entitled Things to do in New York in October detailing his recommendations. This includes: food, wine and outdoors festivals, open houses and a whole lot more.

Likewise, Jennifer Picht of Time Out  wrote an article entitled NYC Events in October 2018. She focused on “the Village Halloween Parade, food fests” and other related events. She described the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze as being “an army of more than 7,000 glowing, intricately carved pumpkins shining along the riverside near Van Cortlandt Manor. This is the tristate area’s most spirited Halloween happening, and also one of the best fall day trips from NYC. Ogling pretty gourds isn’t the only draw.”

So there really is much to do this month in New York…get out there and enjoy it!

National Public Lands Day

Tomorrow lovers of the outdoors can enjoy New York’s wonderful parks for free.  Thanks to National Public Lands Day on September 22, all parks are open to the public to come and enjoy and appreciate the country’s wonderful land and outdoors life.  The Day was established to “celebrate the connection between people and green space in their community, inspire environmental stewardship and encourage use of open space for education, recreation and general health.”

In addition, check out the varied volunteer opportunities  that are available in and around New York City as well as other areas.

For example, tomorrow, a mere 8 minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan, volunteers at Governors Island will get their hands dirty and feel the love of the land as they cut through overgrowth, mulch trees and clear pathways for everyone to enjoy.  The National Environmental Educational Foundation (NEEF) organizes lots of events just like this for the special day so check out their website for more ideas on how to be a productive, constructive part of maintaining and improve the public lands in your neighborhood.

The kids are finally going back to schools now it’s time for you to celebrate.  And what better way to do it than with all the happenings in the city that never sleeps!  Let’s see what’s going on in September.

On Monday September 3, drop the kids off at school and come join the West Indian Day Parade.  Rated by Time Out as “one of the best things to do in NYC,” it is extremely popular, attracting around two million people.  If your kids are still home from school, take them and start their education a bit early by teaching them a little bit about Caribbean culture.

Kick off is 11am but pre-parade parties begin as early as 6am.
